POKOTABI / Koran
香蘭
Located in Kyoto's Saiin neighborhood, Korean restaurant Koran serves iron-grilled thick-cut samgyeopsal alongside dashi-rich motsunabe, pork shabu-shabu, chigae stews, and gimbap.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Sizzled crisp on an iron grill, thick cuts of pork wrapped in fresh leafy greens alongside seared kimchi and garlic are the signature draw at Koran. The rich fat of the pork balances neatly with the acidity and heat of grilled kimchi, while generous servings of greens keep each bite crisp and refreshing. Diners can enjoy the pork down to the last drop, finishing the meal with spicy meat-infused broth or savory fried rice toasted directly on the grill.
Beyond grilled meats, the kitchen offers an enticing lineup of hot pots built around flavorful broths. The motsunabe simmers domestic beef offal, garlic chives, and cabbage with plenty of garlic in a fragrant dashi, ending on a deeply satisfying note with Chinese noodles cooked in the concentrated broth. Guests can also enjoy warming pots such as pork shabu-shabu prepared with Okinawa's Ryubi or Agu pork, or piping-hot chigae sets loaded with tender tofu.
A variety of Korean small plates complements the hot pots and grilled specialties. Tables frequently share crisp-edged jeon pancakes, gimbap rolls, japchae, and tteokbokki. During daytime hours, the restaurant also serves approachable lunch sets, including roast beef bowls and grilled pork sets prepared with ginger pork or pork kimchi.
Situated in Sennen-cho, an easy walk from Saiin Station on the Hankyu Kyoto Line, the dining room offers a mix of conventional tables and sunken horigotatsu seating. A convenient smartphone ordering system lets guests order at their own pace, creating a casual, upbeat atmosphere for friends and families sharing cold draft beer, wine, or makgeolli.
